Week6, Beyond Belief 6
Susan Neiman is asked if there can be a science of morality and shefeels that science is a wonderful thing that humans have created butdoesn't feel it's better or worse than the arts of humanities. Shefeels that saying morality is part of science is demeaning. She alsocommented that religion focuses on teaching its followers to live asgood religious people in order to go to heaven because doing wrong inthis life will only take the individual to hell. I disagree with herin the sense that all religions teach its followers to try to followthe bibles scriptures in the best way that they can, but just becauseone has committed a sin, doesn't mean that the person isautomatically going to hell and therefore no remedy is considered. Iam a true believer that God doesn't punish us, but instead tests ourability to let us decide whether we want to be good or just plainbad. God is the creator of everything and he has the ability to snaphis fingers and make his own creations disappear. No one has theability to think like he does and its up to human kind to determinewhether living a religious life or simply not believing is right forthem. God has given us the ability to think and use our brains, butit's up to us whether we want to misuse our thinking or put it to agood cause. I think that morality is based on what one learns and israised within their values and beliefs and it is definitely not partof a science. The other speaker that came to interest was Beth Loftstiffs. Theonly problem is that only part of her lecture was muted. As a childgrowing up in a catholic family, my mother always used to remind methat God was watching my every move and that where ever I may be at,he was always taking care of me. I encountered some situations in myyoung life (which I can't say, because they are very personal) that Iwould constantly ask God why he was allowing others to hurt me. Iremember that I cried and prayed that it would be over soon. I neverlost my faith nor disregarded the fact that he was looking over mejust like my mother always mentioned. Now that I'm an adult, I knowthat he was there for me, because I was able to overcome thosesituations in my life. The weirdest thing is that now, I always tellmy children what my mother use to tell me and that is that God iswatching over them to protect them, but it's up to them to bethankful to have their parents to protect them when God is busyprotecting the rest of human kind.
